Over 185 area schools are engaged in school gardening (shown as orange carrots www.GTNCharlotte.org). In most of these schools, 1 or 2 teachers lead gardening efforts as an activity implemented as time allows.  Principal and teacher turnover often leave schools without a garden leader and gardens become fallow.

Sustainable school gardening and outdoor learning requires integration into the curriculum, incorporation of nutrition education and an annual gardening strategy.  This is the purpose of Green Teacher Network Certified School Garden Program (PURPLE CARROT) which began with 13 schools fall 2015.

School principals appoint a lead garden teacher and agree to a schoolyear long commitment to school gardening.  The lead teacher works to grow the garden team at each school to a sustainable level of 6 to 8 teachers.  These lead teachers meet monthly with GTN garden coordinators and partners to receive plants, equipment and materials to design, plant, tend, harvest and taste a fall garden and a spring garden.  GTN incorporates lesson plans, recipes and natural eco-system education.  GTN also coordinates corporate volunteers to assist with garden needs and chefs from Chefs Move to Schools to support fall and spring tastings.

Research shows increased consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables leads to increased academics performance and the increased activity of school gardening reduces classroom disruption.

Garden Layouts are supported by Mecklenburg Cooperative Extension and Charlotte Mecklenburg Food Policy Council.  They also incorporate 6 vegetables served in the school cafeteria.

The cost of this schoolyear long program is $5,000.  Arts and Science Council Education Funds can be used.  Funding must be committed no later than April 30, 2016 for the 2016/2017 school year and paid no later than August 1, 2016.
